The pharmaceutical industry of Pakistan has come a long way since the time of independence in 1947, where the pharma industry was almost non-existent in the country. At present, the total number of pharmaceutical manufacturing units in Pakistan stands over 750 units which are operated by international and local manufacturing companies. What makes the pharmaceutical industry in Pakistan a truly future-looking industry is the fact that the industry is able to meet nearly 70% of the medicine demand of the country, which is above average for a developing country. Overall the market share of the pharmaceutical industry in Pakistan is equally divided between the national and international manufacturing companies, making it a highly competitive and evenly distributed sector; which is a rare feature to achieve in the country.
