The paint and coating industry in Pakistan is broadly categorized into two segments; one is the regulated & organized sector with a market share of around 40%, whereas, the rest of the market is claimed by the unorganized & unregulated sector. According to some estimates, there are around 300+ paint and coating manufacturers working in the unregulated sector of the industry, producing paints & coatings of various standards and often offering products at comparatively lower pricing.
The regulated sector may be further categorized into international and national players. International players dominating the industry include Berger, Jotun, AkzoNobel Pakistan, Nippon & Kansai, whereas, the national players with decent market share includes Master, Nelson, Diamond, Brighto, Happilac, and others. While there are hundreds of national manufacturers of paints & coatings in Pakistan, most of these companies have geographically restricted markets, with only 10+ manufacturers working nationally and internationally. Among the national manufacturers, Brighto & Happilac are two of the biggest manufacturers with sharing a 50% market between themselves.
Most of the international brands operating in Pakistan are producing various types of paints & coatings including; industrial paints, automotive paints, construction chemicals, powder coatings, and others. These are majorly produced by Berger, Jotun, AkzoNobel Pakistan, Nippon & Kansai which together claim the major market served by international players.
Classification
There are currently six types of paints and coatings recognized by Pakistan’s Paint Industry including;
The construction activity initiated by the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has played a crucial role in the renaissance of the paint and coating industry. The massive construction work being undertaken across the country has opened up massive opportunities for all players in the industry. Also, there has been an increase in the demand for decorative and building paints, triggered by the growth in the commercial and residential construction sector. Moreover, the commercial construction products being initiated under the CPEC banner have greatly increased the demand of the paints and coatings which for the last many years have registered significant vertical and horizontal growth for companies, as they launch new lines of specialized paints to cater the demand of the various commercial project.
Apart from the domestic growth in the demand for paints & coatings, the industry has also largely thrived due to the strategic location of Pakistan, which enables manufacturers to export products in Afghanistan and Central Asian countries. Afghanistan especially is one of the biggest untapped markets for paint manufacturers in Pakistan. As the country rises from decades’ long war, there is a large construction activity currently being undertaken in Afghanistan. Also, 90% of Afghanistan’s needs for Paints and Coatings are met by the Pakistani industry, which plays a vital role in the consistent development and growth of the industry.
At present most of the national paint and coating manufacturers in Pakistan have collaborated with international manufacturers to produce higher quality products for national and international markets. Some of the major international players in the paints and coating industry in Pakistan are from China, Germany, Japan, UK, and Turkey. This international collaboration has further helped the national players to improve their capacity and quality of products not just for domestic consumption but also for export to Afghanistan & other Central Asian countries.
